About this guide

Help when rent, housing costs or arrears are becoming unaffordable, including current support routes and practical evidence to keep.

Act before arrears grow

Contact your landlord or housing provider, benefits service and independent adviser early. Keep rent statements, benefit decisions, tenancy documents and evidence of payments.

England — Housing Payment from April 2026

In England, Discretionary Housing Payments ended on 31 March 2026 and were replaced from 1 April 2026 by the Housing Payment strand of the Crisis and Resilience Fund. It can support eligible people receiving Housing Benefit or Universal Credit housing costs where further housing-cost help is needed.
