Contact a Scottish council

Scottish local authorities have legal duties to help people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Temporary accommodation must be offered while a homelessness application is assessed.

Settled accommodation

For households assessed as unintentionally homeless, the council duty generally includes temporary accommodation until settled accommodation is secured. Scotland abolished the priority-need test for homeless households in 2012.

CURRENT LEGISLATION SUMMARY

Local connection

Since 29 November 2022, Scottish councils generally cannot refer an applicant to another Scottish local authority solely because of local connection. Cross-border rules can still be different.
