UPDATED UK GUIDE

About this guide

A practical guide to applying for social housing, recording housing need and keeping an application up to date across the UK.

Applications are nation and area specific

Social-housing allocation systems differ across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Councils and housing providers use allocation rules to assess need and priority.

Keep evidence current

Tell the housing authority about changes such as homelessness risk, overcrowding, disability, medical needs, domestic abuse, children, unsafe accommodation, caring responsibilities or accessibility needs. Keep copies of evidence and written decisions.

Northern Ireland

Social-housing applications are assessed through the Northern Ireland Housing Executive under the Housing Selection Scheme.
