Important: an ombudsman, inspectorate or regulator does not normally replace the organisation's own complaint process. In most cases, complain to the service first and complete its internal stages before escalating.

Search public-service accountability organisations

Search by organisation, public-service area, jurisdiction or function. Every card links to the official website, complaints or access route, reports, inspections, FOI and data.

How to use a complaint or accountability route

The exact legal and procedural route varies, but this sequence helps prevent complaints being rejected as premature or sent to the wrong organisation.

Identify the responsible body

Check which organisation made the decision, delivered the service or holds the relevant records.

Use the internal process

Submit a clear complaint with dates, evidence, the problem and the remedy you seek.

Complete escalation stages

Ask for review or final response and keep complaint references, decisions and supporting evidence.

Approach the correct external body

Use the relevant ombudsman, regulator, inspectorate, tribunal or court within any applicable deadline.
