UK local council and local government campaigns

About This Campaign Directory

Local-government campaigning covers far more than party politics. Campaigns can focus on council funding, local services, parish and town councils, planning, housing, community ownership, social care, climate action, local democracy, councillor safety, representation, young people and the way public decisions are made.

Campaign page only – neutral listing. This page explains what campaign organisations and petition creators are asking for. Listing a campaign does not mean Right First Time UK endorses every claim, policy proposal, political position or electoral system promoted by that campaign. This directory does not rank political parties or tell anyone how to vote.

Local Democracy, Community Power & Public-Space Campaigns

Electoral reform

Make Votes Matter

Make Votes Matter is a single-issue campaign advocating proportional representation for elections to the House of Commons. Its 2026 activity has included calls for a National Commission on Electoral Reform.

Campaigners also organise local days of action and street campaigning around the country.

England

Electoral Reform Society – Strengthening England's Local Democracy

ERS campaigns for proportional local elections in England and argues that local council seats should more closely reflect votes cast.

This is the organisation's campaign position; electoral systems involve competing democratic arguments and trade-offs.

Community power

We're Right Here

Community leaders supported by a coalition of national organisations are campaigning for communities to have more power over their area, local services, buildings and funding.

Public services

Keep It Local

Locality's campaign encourages councils and health bodies to work with local community organisations when designing and commissioning public services rather than relying only on large-scale outsourcing models.

Community assets

Save Our Spaces

Locality campaigns to prevent valued publicly owned buildings and spaces from being lost to private sale and promotes community ownership as an alternative.

Campaign examples include libraries, youth centres, allotments, community buildings and swimming pools.

Respectful politics

Jo Cox Civility Commission

A renewed call to action for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland was published in February 2026.

Climate • UK councils

Community ownership

Locality – Community Ownership

Alongside Save Our Spaces, Locality campaigns for stronger community ownership and policy support enabling communities to acquire and manage local buildings and land.

Local campaign example

Milton Keynes & Stony Stratford – Electoral Reform Campaigning

Make Votes Matter campaigners took to the streets of Stony Stratford on Saturday 13 June 2026 as part of nationwide campaigning calling for electoral reform.

The Milton Keynes 2026 council election has been used by proportional representation campaigners as an example of the difference that can occur between overall vote shares and seats won under the current electoral arrangements.

20 seats Liberal Democrats Approx. 18.5% aggregate vote share in the cited election-results analysis
19 seats Labour Approx. 22.2%
12 seats Conservative Approx. 20.5%
9 seats Reform UK Approx. 24.4%

Milton Keynes City Council confirms that the 7 May 2026 election was an all-out election for 60 seats across 21 wards. The council later confirmed that the Liberal Democrat and Labour groups won 20 and 19 seats respectively and formed a partnership administration.

Neutrality note: the vote-share comparison above is included because it forms part of the electoral-reform campaign argument. It is not a Right First Time UK recommendation for or against any political party or voting system.
