What Directors Do

The Board helps protect the organisation's purpose, integrity and long-term development.

🏛 Governance & Oversight

  • Contribute to important organisational decisions.
  • Help ensure appropriate governance arrangements are followed.
  • Question and scrutinise proposals before major decisions are made.
  • Help identify organisational risks.
  • Support appropriate financial and operational controls.

🔎 Scrutiny & Accountability

  • Ask questions where more information is needed.
  • Challenge decisions constructively.
  • Consider evidence rather than simply agreeing with others.
  • Help maintain transparency.
  • Support accurate and responsible public-interest work.

📈 Development

  • Help shape the organisation's future direction.
  • Contribute ideas for projects and partnerships.
  • Support sustainable organisational growth.
  • Help identify skills or resources the organisation needs.
  • Support development of policies and procedures.

🤝 Working Together

  • Work constructively with other Directors.
  • Respect different opinions and experience.
  • Support campaign leaders, volunteers and members appropriately.
  • Maintain clear boundaries between governance and individual campaigns.
  • Put the interests of the organisation before personal interests.

Being a Director Carries Responsibility

A Director is not simply an honorary title. Formal Directors may have legal and governance duties connected with the organisation and its registered company structure.

Applicants should therefore be willing to understand their responsibilities, declare conflicts of interest, participate appropriately in decision-making and act responsibly.
