Child maintenance helps meet children's financial needs. However, changes in income, disputed calculations, arrears, collection fees and enforcement action can place considerable pressure on families. Paying and receiving parents may both need clear information about their rights and the steps available when a child maintenance arrangement is not working as expected.
If you are looking for financial hardship support because of Child Maintenance Service (CMS) payments, deductions or disputed arrears, Right First Time UK offers independent information to help you understand the issues, find relevant guides and identify appropriate official support.
Our Child Maintenance Service information hub includes guidance on:
If maintenance payments or deductions leave you struggling with essential living costs, check the calculation notice, the income information used and any changes that CMS should know about. Keep copies of payslips, benefit statements, bank records, CMS letters and evidence of shared care where relevant.
Financial difficulty does not automatically cancel a legal maintenance obligation. The correct process depends on whether you are reporting a change, disputing an assessment, challenging arrears or complaining about poor administration. The rules and time limits may differ, so always check the decision notice and current official guidance.
Accessing financial hardship support may include checking benefit entitlements, exploring local emergency assistance and speaking to a free specialist debt-advice organisation. Our Financial Support hub provides further signposting. Parents can also use our existing guides to understand CMS decisions and prepare relevant evidence.
Start with the relevant guides linked above, which explain calculations, changes, shared care, complaints and wider financial support.
Right First Time UK provides information and signposting, not official CMS decisions, regulated debt advice or legal representation. Our aim is to help parents understand the available procedures while recognising the financial needs and wellbeing of children and both households.

OPEN GUIDEDWP has published its latest customer-experience research covering Child Maintenance Service customers between April 2025 and March 2026.
Overall ease of use, satisfaction, customer characteristics and five experience drivers: Get it Right, Ease of Use, Communicate Clearly, Professional and Supportive, and Trusted.
The report is based on surveys with 2,313 CMS customers. Fieldwork was independently conducted by IFF Research.
This is customer-experience research, not an audit of whether individual maintenance calculations or decisions were legally correct. Read methodology and sampling alongside headline findings.

DWP release: 29 September 2026, covering June 2026. The service reported 820,000 arrangements covering approximately 1.1 million children. Since 2012, cumulative unpaid maintenance was reported at £812.9 million. In the June quarter, £117.7 million was due via Collect & Pay, of which £89 million was paid and £28.7 million was unpaid.
Of Collect & Pay paying parents due to pay, 77% paid some maintenance. That is not the same as 77% paying in full. DWP does not measure payment compliance under Direct Pay, so its reported amount due there must not be described as an amount definitely unpaid.
DWP also describes an earlier CMS2012 statistical categorisation problem affecting approximately 2% of debt. This is a historical statistical-method issue, not proof that 2% of current individual arrears assessments are incorrect.
