Bullying, disability-related harassment, safeguarding and evidence

How to report concerns, protect the child and use the correct national guidance.

ADHD and Bullying

Children with ADHD can be targeted because of behaviour, impulsivity, communication, social differences or vulnerability to manipulation. Bullying can also worsen attendance, self-esteem, behaviour and mental health.

Record

  • Date, time and location
  • What happened
  • Who witnessed it
  • Messages or screenshots where relevant
  • How the child was affected

Ask school to do

  • Investigate promptly
  • Protect the pupil from further harm
  • Record and monitor incidents
  • Review supervision and adjustments
  • Use safeguarding procedures where needed
Bullying may also be disability-related harassment or a safeguarding issue.

The correct response may involve the anti-bullying policy, equality duties and safeguarding procedures at the same time.

Support across the UK

Education systems differ across the four nations. Use the route for where the child is educated.

England

SEN Support and EHCPs operate under the Children and Families Act 2014 and SEND Code of Practice.

Wales

Wales uses the Additional Learning Needs system and Individual Development Plans (IDPs).

Scotland

Scotland uses Additional Support for Learning and may use plans including Co-ordinated Support Plans where legal criteria are met.

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland uses its SEN framework, Education Authority support and Statements of Special Educational Needs.
