Homework, routines, organisation, breaks and positive support

Strategies that support learning without turning home into another source of overload.

Supporting Learning at Home

Home support can make routines and homework easier, but the aim is not to recreate a whole school day at home. Some pupils need time to recover before they can manage additional demands.

Make tasks smaller

  • One step at a time
  • Short work periods
  • Visible finish point
  • Breaks between stages

Make organisation visible

  • To-do list
  • Checklist by the door
  • One place for equipment
  • Calendar or reminder system

Keep feedback positive

  • Praise specific effort
  • Avoid long lectures
  • Use calm reminders
  • Agree realistic priorities
NHS guidance supports short tasks, simple instructions and visible to-do lists.

If homework repeatedly causes severe distress or takes far longer than expected, tell school and ask whether the task or support needs adjusting.

Support across the UK

Education systems differ across the four nations. Use the route for where the child is educated.

England

SEN Support and EHCPs operate under the Children and Families Act 2014 and SEND Code of Practice.

Wales

Wales uses the Additional Learning Needs system and Individual Development Plans (IDPs).

Scotland

Scotland uses Additional Support for Learning and may use plans including Co-ordinated Support Plans where legal criteria are met.

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland uses its SEN framework, Education Authority support and Statements of Special Educational Needs.
